Competition Guidelines

GENERAL

Players must always consider the fragile nature of the greens in all their actions.

Flat smooth-soled shoes must be worn at all times when on the green as heels and tread patterns damage the grass. Thongs and sandals (without heels) are fine; you can also bowl in your socks.

Delivery of bowls at high speed is discouraged as this can cause injury.

Bowls borrowed from the club should be returned to the correct storage box.

COMPETITION OUTLINE

Teams will comprise four persons: ‘Lead’; ‘Second’; ‘Third’ and a ‘Skip”.

A player unable to attend shall make arrangements for a replacement player on their team.

Each competitor will have two bowls.

Each evening the competition will comprise twelve ends.

Two delivery mats and one jack will be provided on each rink.

Games shall commence at 6.00pm and be completed by 8.00pm.

One practice end is allowed for players to familiarise themselves with the green speed.

Should you finish before 8.00pm you may continue bowling, however only the first 12 ends will count.

The bell will be rung at 7.50pm and signifies that the end being played shall be the last.

GAME OUTLINE

The object is to deliver your bowls closer to the jack than the opposition.

The closest team bowl or bowls to the jack score a point or points for that team.

Before the game commences a coin is tossed and the winning team delivers the jack.

The team winning an end rolls the jack on the next end.

The mat is positioned on the rink centreline and at least two metres from the ditch.

The ‘jack’ must be delivered at least 23 metres from the mat. (refer white spot on bank)

After delivery, the ‘jack’ must be centred by the skips (at least two metres from the ditch).

When delivering the ‘jack’ and the bowls, one foot must always remain on or over the mat.

The winner is the team with the most points (shots) scored.

BOWLS and the JACK OUTSIDE RINK BOUNDRIES and in the DITCH

A bowl that finishes outside the rink boundary line is removed to the bank.

A bowl that finishes in the ditch is removed to the bank (except a ‘toucher’ – see below)

A bowl may move the ‘jack’ to a new position inside the rink boundary lines.

A bowl may move the ‘jack’ to the ditch inside the rink boundary line. The white marker is used to show the position of a ‘jack’ in the ditch.

A bowl that has touched the ‘jack’ is a ‘toucher’, it is marked with chalk.

A ‘toucher’ in the ditch remains in play and shall not be removed.

A ‘toucher’ that finishes outside a rink boundary line is removed to the bank.

A ‘jack’ displaced outside the rink boundary shall be placed one metre inside that boundary and two metres from the ditch

SUBSTITUTES

Teams are responsible for arranging their own substitute players if any team member is unavailable to play on game day. (all substitute players must comply with the footware guidelines outlined above)

There may be spare players from other teams available to act as substitutes on game day, but this cannot be guarunteed each week.

Teams may play with only three (3) team members and six (6) bowls if they are unable to find a substitute player. Teams with less than three (3) team members will not be able to play for competition points, the game will be declared a forfeit and the points awarded to that team's opposition. Though the two teams may organise a social game between themselves.

FORFEITS

i) for the team forfeiting, the game shall be recorded as a loss and will receive no points or shots.

ii) for the team receiving the forfeit, the game shall be recorded as a win and will receive 2 points as well as have 8 shots added to their shots up total.

Weather Affected Games

A game can be called off due to inclement weather or fading light by:

a) the organising committee.

b) mutual agreement of both skips/teams.

For a game that has been cancelled to be considered complete, a minimum of 8 ends must have been completed.

i) games called off before the completion of the 8th end will be declared a 'wash out' and both teams will receive 1 point and have 4 shots added to their shots up total.

ii) games called after the completion of the 8th end will be considered complete and the score at that point will be considered the final score.

Where all games in a Round are canceled due to weather before any play has commenced, each team will receive 1 point, no additional shots will be awarded.
